Getting to Know: Mike Schmitt

As Supervisor of Fiber Optic Services, Mike Schmitt oversees field employees to ensure projects and repairs are completed on time.

Before working at DQE what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

One of my first jobs was working landscaping, specifically building retaining walls. This job not only taught me about hard work and working as a team to complete jobs but also that carrying blocks all day in the summer is not something I wanted to do forever!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like spending time with my family and being outdoors as much as possible.

What does true leadership mean to you?

True leadership is leading by example and not asking someone to do anything I wouldn’t do. Also, treating people as I would want to be treated as an employee.

What drew you to DQE originally?

I have always been interested in fiber optics and saw a great opportunity in expanding a business across the state.

What has been your favorite project so far at DQE?

I would say that my favorite project was the eastern expansion to Harrisburg. While it was a lot of driving, it was cool to think that the work I was putting in was contributing to our future customers in Harrisburg that connect back to Pittsburgh.
